James Laurinaitis: ‘First Time Being 1-0 And It Feels Pretty Good’

The St. Louis Rams escaped Week 1 with a 27-24 win over the Arizona Cardinals to start the season off with a valuable NFC West divisional win. Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis talked with Doug Gottlieb about the win over the Cardinals and whether or not division wins really feel like they count for a win and a half.

“I wish it was a win and a half,” Laurinaitis said. “We’ll take any win we can.”

The game-wining field goal came from the foot of Greg Zuerlein, who nailed a 48-yard field goal with 40 seconds. But after battling the Cardinals on the field all day and then leaving the game up to the kicker, there’s only one thing to do on the sideline.

“We just hope it goes in,” Laurinaitis said. “We got a lot of confidence in Greg. We see this kid kick routinely 60-yard field goals in practice.”

Since Laurinaitis began his NFL career with the Rams, they have put together records of 1-15, 7-9, 2-14 and 7-8-1. They have gone from being the oldest team in the league his first season to the point where is viewed as an old veteran in the locker room despite being only in the fifth season of his career. But Laurinaitis wants to make sure the losing seasons are over with the Rams and the way to do that is to change the culture with the young players on the team.

“I think the main thing we try to teach these guys is the NFL is not one of those things where you go 7-8-1 and the next years it’s not guaranteed you got 10-6 and the next year you go 13-3,” Laurinaitis said. “It’s not a gradual incline like that. You can go from 7-9 to 2-13 in a heartbeat with the same roster, with a better roster.”

For now the Rams are 1-0 and can take their last-minute win over the Cardinals into their Week 2 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.

“First time being 1-0,” Laurinaitis said. “And it feels pretty good.”
