The Doug Gottlieb Show Weekly Rewind – 7/21-7/25

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder

“I think that when you have big hitters – Puig and Ramirez hit the ball out over the plate really well – you try to pitch them inside,” Holliday said. “Nobody’s trying to hit anybody. I’ve been hit a bunch in my career. They try to pitch me inside. They don’t want to throw the ball out over the plate to guys that drive the ball to the middle of the field well. If they think that they have to retaliate for hitting Ramirez twice and hitting Puig once, I guess that’s their prerogative.”

JOE SMITH – 7/21/14
Los Angeles Angels reliever

“I mean, what ramifications could there be? (Rodney) did it right at our dugout. How can he (be mad)? What’s he going to do? As a reliever, I kind of just want to go in and get my job done and get out of there. I’ve never been a guy (who does something like that), especially when the 2-3-4 (hitters) in one of the best lineups in the (game are) coming up. I really don’t want to wake them up with a (one-run) lead. Apparently he wanted to take a different approach. If you want to wake up Trout and Pujols and Hamilton and the rest of our lineup, good luck.”

DAVID BAKER – 7/22/14
Pro Football Hall of Fame President

“It’s like an NFL game (in) a stadium (with) 23,000 fans. It is compressed, and you are up close and personal. But you’re going to see Sammy Watkins out there. You’re going to see a lot of rookies getting time. I think it’s going to be a very special game in some respects considering, for instance, we’ll have Jim Kelly there. This is (also) the first Bills game since Ralph Wilson passed away. So it’s kind of passing the torch to a new generation as the NFL starts its 95th season.”

PGA Golfer

“Everybody that plays golf on the PGA Tour should be thankful for him every day they wake up – because he’s definitely responsible for what it is now and the popularity and everything. He made it exciting. I’ve never seen anyone just dominate like that.”

BUTCH HARMON – 7/22/14
Rickie Fowler’s swing coach

“Yeah, when Rory has it going, he’s probably the best player in the world at the moment. He’s proved that – not just last week, but through the year. It’s an interesting take on Rory when you go back to last year and (look at) some of the problems he’s had and how he’s come through that and how much he’s matured.”

RICH CHO – 7/24/14
Charlotte Hornets GM

“It’s hard when you’re trying to rebuild. The hardest part about rebuilding is getting through the early years. You know you’re going to go through a lot of losses and growing pains, but you have to keep the big picture in mind and the long term in mind. We still have a long way to go for sure, but I think we’re headed in the right direction, so we’re looking forward to the upcoming season.”

CHIP BROWN – 7/25/14 writer

“It’s just been a massive culture change under Charlie Strong, who came in and was going to do it his way. He said it at his opening-day press conference. At first, it was little things – like getting rid of the Gatorade, juice bar, smoothy stands (and) protein bars. All throughout the locker room, (he had) the TVs (taken) out. (He) told the players they couldn’t throw up their horns until they’d earned it.”
